Spooky Season on Amazon Prime

Happy Halloween Spooky Readers,

What better way to set the mood for the spooky season than sitting down all wrapped up while watching spooky movies. When picking this list apparently, I picked my spooky comfort films that are on film. I love this time of year the weather is changing, and nothing beats spooky film as the nights get darker.

I am using poster images I have found through google I do not own any rights and am using the image purely for future review purposes (Fair use under the copyright act sections 29 and 30 under use for a review).

Ghostbusters (1984)

Plot: After the members of a team of scientists lose their cushy positions at a university in New York City, they decide to become "ghostbusters" to wage a high-tech battle with the supernatural for money. They stumble upon a gateway to another dimension, a doorway that will release evil upon the city. The Ghostbusters must now save New York from complete destruction.

Thoughts: I love to orginal don’t get me wrong but Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) just hit in a different way the orginal can’t. I grew up watching Ghostbusters and it’s a cosy film for me to watch and even now the jokes still land and I chuckle.

Beetlejuice (1988)

Plot: After Barbara and Adam Maitland die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes and teen daughter Lydia buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success. Their efforts attract Beetlejuice, a rambunctious spirit whose "help" quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia.

Thoughts: Yes, this is the second appearance of Beetlejuice I just can’t help it. Come on Tim give me the second one I’ve waited long enough (I wasn’t even born when the first one came out but that’s not the point). The dark humour throughout Beetlejuice has yet to matched in my opinion. Also, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!!

The Little Vampire (2000)

Plot: After he moves to Scotland with his parents, only child Tony struggles to make friends at his new school. But he is bullied and picked on by the other boys and has little hope of overcoming his miserable new life. Then he meets Rudolph a kid vampire with whom Tony becomes very close. But, when Rudolph's life and the future of the vampire race are threatened by a ruthless vampire hunter, Tony must find the courage to save his best friend.

Thoughts: I remember going to the cinema and going to see this and getting a set of vampire teeth on the way home that I refused to take out because I was a vampire. Fun Lauren fact of the post: this is the only film that Alice Krige was in, and I wasn’t scared of, I have PTSD from the Borg Queen introduction (Mother Goose can back up I used to cry seeing her I anything but this).  Even now at almost 30 years old I will look on YouTube for the Cow scene, if you know you know.

Hannibal Rising (2007)

Plot: After witnessing the violent deaths of his parents at the end of World War II, young Hannibal Lecter flees to his uncle's home in Paris. He learns his uncle is dead, but the man's mysterious Japanese widow, Lady Murasaki welcomes him, nonetheless. An aptitude for science helps Hannibal gain acceptance to medical school, where he hones the skills, he needs to exact revenge for the atrocities he witnessed.

Thoughts: Before we get to my thoughts, I would like to say Rest in Peace Gaspard Ulliel. It wasn’t till after I rewatched this movie in my late teens that I gave in and finally read the Hannibal Lecter Series by Thomas Harris and I regret not doing it sooner. This film is dark but has beautiful quality that contrasts satisfyingly with the mass amounts of bloodshed that seep thru this entertaining but horrifying trip down memory lane.

Burke & Hare (2011)

Plot: Macabre comedy based on the Burke and Hare murders carried out in the early 19th century. Dr Knox required bodies for dissection and use in lectures, and Burke and Hare found it a rather lucrative business to `provide' these bodies in return for payment.

Thoughts: This is one of the films that make me feel like a naughty child about to be told off. Theres’s bits in this film that make me laugh and I find myself scolding myself like not the time. This is ghoulish comedy and I think it work well in that sense and having Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis play the Burke & Hare worked for me. I will say though I know the rough story of Burke & Hare and kind of went in almost blind to the story and that might be why I enjoyed it only seeing it at face value as a dark comedy.
