I would like to say thank you to Olivia, and Titan for sending me a physical copy of At Midnight: 15 Beloved Fairy Tales Reimagined for free in exchange for an honest review.
It’s no secret I love a good retelling and I have even managed to review over 20 for READs. Imagine my excitement when I got an email from Titan telling me about a single book that contained 15 reimagined fairy tales. Then the delight seeing it included authors like Melissa Albert and Hafsah Faizal.
One thing with anthologies is they can either be a curse or a blessing, depending on what way you look at it. I am team blessing as you can pick and choose the stories you want to read or reread without rereading the whole book. What I loved about this collection of retellings is how each of the authors managed to not only compliment the original fairy tale but how they managed to add more layers and nuance to the tales I grew up reading.
I will be honest I enjoyed some stories more than others, but that’s the blessing of an anthology. I got to meet new authors and writing styles and added some new authors to my TBR pile. I loved how each of the writing styles and voices were different as it added a lot of diversity into this book.
This book is one of the cutest fairy tale retelling anthologies I have read. I love the fact that there are excerpts from the original tales in the back of the book. I think when I reread this book, I will take a leaf out of Lauren from Where there’s ink there’s paper book where she is flipping to the back and rereading the original and then reading the retelling. My only issue with the book is probably just a Me issue and that is that I wish the book went original excerpt then the retelling but that’s just a Me thing and I am probably being a little pedantic.
I will also say that many of the tales in this anthology are closer to their Grimm counterpart. Fairy tales should be dark, they were a warning for children to behave themselves, to keep alive traditions and to pass information through history. This is a cute read and worth adding to your TBR.
