This Book Is Gay by Juno Dawson

Hello Readers,

Fun fact of the day dear Reader This Book Is Gay is the ninth most banned book in America. Did I buy this book because I plan on reading as many banned books as I can of course I did. Stay petty Readers.

This isn’t the first informative LGBTQIA+ Book I have read, and I doubt it will be my last. I will always support the LGBTQIA+ community and I read as many informative LGBTQIA+ Books that I can so I can be the best ally I can be and so I help people when they come to me.

I think this book is a great way to spread LGBTQIA+ acceptance and tolerance and it shouldn’t be banned. I’m not saying that this book is a complete list of everything you need to know about the LGBTQIA+ community but it’s a start. Whether you’re thinking of coming out, questioning your gender identity, sexuality or just want to get more of an understanding of the LGBTQIA+ community please read this book.

This book is a charming read and doesn’t come across as patronising and covers lots of different aspects, but it also doesn't take itself too seriously. Juno also talks to people who are also part of the LGBTQIA+ which helps this book not come across to preachy and it gives us the reader another viewpoint. This book answers a lot of questions and clarifies common misconceptions that people might be afraid to ask in person or even google.

Juno addresses the shortfalls in school systems when it comes to being LGBTQIA+. Why is hetero sex the only thing taught in schools? I really hope sex education is better than when I was at school 13 years ago, I remember sex education was being split into girls and boys and going to different rooms. We were taught how put a condom on a banana and looked at all the contraception that we must be on. There was no mention about gay or lesbian sex.

Juno also looks at dating and how difficult it can be. Dating while being part of the LGBTQIA+ is difficult as not everyone will be ready to come out as soon as they realise as the external pressures from friendship groups and family can keep the door shut. Even in 2023 LGBTQIA+ people are dating in secret. A lot of people I went to school with didn’t end up coming out of the closet till university which is a little sad when you think how many years they had to “Hide” part of who they are.

There was nothing like this while I was growing up this book is a huge billboard that screams that it’s okay to be Gay. The book also contains a chapter for adults with LGBTQ children and details of some websites and telephone lines where you can find help and support.
