Such Pretty Flowers by K.L. Cerra

Happy Spooky Season Readers,

Such Pretty Flowers is K.L. Cerra debut novel, and I really enjoyed the writing style. I also can’t wait to get my hands on Under Her Spell (February 2024). I loved everything about this book as it was entertaining and downright creepy, and you can’t help but feel for the characters.  The atmosphere though out the book was fantastic, and I loved how Cerra included some of its local lore from Savannah, Georgia. I found this to be a clever and exciting work of dark fiction and I mean who doesn’t love a book that mixes horror with botany.

Holly was a great protagonist as she is realistically flawed and that helped us understand the decisions she made, and it also made her more relatable and likeable. Holly recently lost her brother Dane to “suicide” and is overwhelmed with grief and remorse following the discovery of Dane's body.

Holly keeps guilt tripping herself for replying late to her brother’s odd text the night before he killed himself. The more Holly thinks about her brothers passing the more she doesn’t believe it was suicide and thinks that his girlfriend Maura may have had a hand in his death. Holly decides to investigate and finds herself moving in with Dane's girlfriend Maura trying to piece together clues to explain her brother’s sudden decline. Soon Holly finds herself trapped in a web of lies, sexual tension, and carnivorous plants.

Such Pretty Flowers was a bit of a slow burner, but thanks to the atmosphere and the characters, I never found it lacklustre. This book was a toxic seduction and you never quite like the girlfriend, you know something is not right with her. You can’t help but want to find out why she makes you uneasy and that kept me hooked.

This was a brilliant debut book the plot was twisty, haunting thrillers and I really can’t wait to read Under Her Spell.
