I appreciated the author's note at the end of the book regarding the inspiration for the book and the inclusion of facts on the real historical characters mentioned in the book.
I loved Eliot’s writing style it was beautiful, immersive and it flowed effortlessly. Eliot masterfully plots the twists and turns throughout the story, making this book an exciting and addictive read. While some liberties were taken telling Léon Delafosse’s story in this book, it’s important to remember that the book main characters are based on real historical figures. After reading the book I enjoyed doing a little research into each of the characters and found them fascinating.
This book did a wonderful job examining the struggles between French social classes. I loved joining Léon on his journey to find out who he was in the high society of France. This might just be because I have recently reread the vampire chronicles, but I found similarities between Leon and Lestat de Lioncourt both men want to better their status in Paris through the arts. I’m sorry this might just be a little thing only I have noticed, and I thought it was quite a cute little niche thing.
The drama that follows Léon attempting to break into the social circles of Paris's wealthy and social elite. My little black heart broke each time Leon doubted himself and it broke a little more each time he was betrayed by his so-called friends and was rejected by every single one of them. I also liked how the characters changed, it was realistic and wasn’t just a forced plot point.
