Long Live the Pumpkin Queen by Shea Earnshaw Review

Happy Halloween Readers,

I have read a lot of cute creepy reads coming up to Halloween and this week is about them. I am going to kick off this week with Pumpkin Queen herself. This review might be bias as I love The Nightmare Before Christmas. This was the first book where I jumped back into The Nightmare Before Christmas universe, and I loved every second of it. I’m not going to lie I was a very excited but also a bit nervous about reading this book, but Shea soon put any worries I had to the back of my mind.

This might be a me thing… Okay it is 100% a me thing but the first time I read this book it felt a little odd like I was reading a friend’s diary as bizarre as that sounds. But this was not an issue when I reread the book for this spooky season. During my read I think I apricated the book more than the first and it brought back the love and excitement I get while watching the film.

This story isn’t just a sequel, but it gives us the reader a glimpse into Sally’s origin story as dark secrets of her past are exposed. This book takes place after Jack and Sally after the events of the film and Jack and Sally have gotten married and are ready to start their lives as Halloween Town’s Pumpkin King and Queen. To celebrate their marriage, they go on honeymoon to Valentines Town where Sally’s anxiety starts to take root.

Sadly, it’s not long till Sally’s anxiety gets the best of her leading to questionable decision in the anxiety doom spiral Sally isn't sure she's cut out to be the Pumpkin Queen and runs into the grove of trees to escape the pressure. Sally just like Jack in the film stumbles across a long-lost tree door to an ancient realm and her curiosity gets the better of her. This new door takes Sally and Zero to Dream Town.

This was the second book by Shea that I have read, and I love her writing style. Shea did an amazing job of capturing all the creatures and worlds that I remembered from the film. I loved how well she manged to create new worlds within The Nightmare Before Christmas universe that we have never seen before but felt like they fitted right in and had been there all along. In my opinion Shea did an amazing job in capturing the true essence of the Nightmare Before Christmas story and this book is a perfect companion to the film.

Stay Spooky
