Hello Readers,
Thank you to Edelweiss for providing me with an eBook copy of Planet Drag: Uncover the Global Herstory by Courtney Conquers in exchange for an honest review. The copy I received on kindle didn’t do the cover justice, so I’m using an image found through Google (Fair use for review purposes).
This book was a fascinating read that expanded my
understanding of drag’s history. It highlights both the progress made and the
challenges that have shaped drag as an art form, serving as both a celebration
of its evolution and a tribute to those who paved the way.
While RuPaul's Drag Race is referenced, the book doesn’t
focus solely on its impact. Instead, it leverages the show’s popularity as a
gateway to the broader world of drag, introducing readers to a rich tapestry of
performers both past and present who have shaped and continue to influence the
culture beyond the mainstream.
One of the things I loved most about this book was how it
explored drag in different countries. It highlights the unique trends,
histories, and cultural variations, showing that there’s no single way to do
drag it’s a vibrant, ever-evolving art form shaped by each place’s history and
society. I also really appreciated how accessible and engaging the book is. It
gives a well-researched yet easy-to-digest look at drag’s impact around the
world, making it a great read for both long-time fans and newcomers.
I saw in other reviews that the book included beautiful
photographs, but my copy didn’t have them. That’s okay, though the text alone
was still just as engaging. It offers a fascinating look at how drag has
thrived in various parts of the world, proving that it’s always been here. With drag being both celebrated and challenged today, books like this feel more
important than ever.
