Sense & Second-Degree Murder by Tirzah Price Review

Hello Readers,
This is the second book I've read in the Jane Austen Murder Mystery Series, with the first being Pride and Premeditation.

Sense and Second-Degree Murder is a clever, compelling retelling of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, masterfully reimagined as a murder mystery. While still rooted in the beloved world of the Dashwood sisters, this version brings a thrilling twist to the classic tale—one that feels fresh, dynamic, and unexpectedly addictive.

This time around, the story opens with a jolt: Elinor discovers their father dead in his office, and with Marianne’s help, quickly uncovers evidence of poison in his teacup. The sisters set off to solve the crime. Their investigation is complicated not just by danger and secrets, but also by the inheritance of their family estate by their half-brother, whose haughty wife wastes no time in evicting them.

Tirzah doesn’t just modernize the sisters she gives them purpose. Elinor's passion for chemistry, Marianne’s work with a private investigator, and Margaret’s emerging love for writing add dimension and drive to their characters, making their journeys satisfying. Margaret, often side-lined in adaptations, is given a wonderful arc that truly lets her shine.

The new setting in London adds vibrancy and atmosphere, especially as it intersects with the historical intrigue of early medicinal uses of opium and morphine. Familiar characters remain true to their cores, yet Tirzah adds subtle tweaks that make them feel both classic and new. Even the villains are well-drawn, their motivations believable and rooted in this clever reinterpretation.

The mystery itself is well-paced, full of twists and red herrings, and offers enough suspense to keep even seasoned whodunit fans guessing. As with Pride and Premeditation, familiarity with Austen’s original is not a requirement, though readers who know the source will find extra joy in spotting the clever parallels.

Ultimately, Sense and Second-Degree Murder is not only a sharp and engaging mystery but also a heartfelt story of sisterhood, resilience, and growth. Price captures the spirit of Austen while giving her heroines the agency and adventure they deserve. A delightful read from start to finish.
