Orphia and Eurydicius by Elyse John Review

Hello Readers,
Orphia and Eurydicius is one of those beautiful stories that takes a familiar myth and transforms it into something truly special.

Orphia, has a voice that’s both a blessing and a burden. When she meets Eurydicius, a kind-hearted shield-maker, she finally finds the courage to share her poetry, setting off a journey that challenges gods, men, and the choices she must make between fame and love.

What makes this story stand out is how it flips the gender roles in a way that feels so natural and meaningful. Orphia is fierce, determined, and beautifully expressive, while Eurydicius is gentle, kind, and quietly strong. Their love is tender, patient, and so refreshing in the way it challenges what we expect from a romance.

The writing is absolutely breath taking. Every word is carefully chosen, and the story unfolds at a perfect pace, allowing you to savour each moment as it unfolds. It’s not a quick read, but one you’ll want to take your time with, as the emotion and meaning behind each chapter really pulls you in.

The Muses bring so much life and personality to the story, and the gods (as you’d expect) are as tough as ever. There’s also a beautiful range of love represented here, which makes it feel even more inclusive and relatable.

By the end, I was in tears not just for the characters, but for the powerful truths about creation, survival, and who gets to have a voice. Familiarity with the original myth does nothing to soften the emotional blow

Orphia and Eurydicius isn’t just a gender-swapped version of a myth it’s a deep, heartfelt exploration of love, power, and the stories we choose to tell. I can’t recommend it enough.
