Song of Sacrifice by Janell Rhiannon Review

Hello Readers,

Song of Sacrifice is breathtaking written with such beauty and depth that I was immediately swept away. Song of Sacrifice is the Janell first instalment in the Homeric Chronicles by Janell Rhiannon.

Please note that I don’t own the rights to the cover image the image is being used under Fair Use for review and review purposes, in accordance with sections 29 and 30 of the Copyright Act. The cover is too pretty to be black and white on my kindle.

This book is a bold and vivid retelling of the myth of Troy. Through her lush prose and masterful storytelling, Rhiannon brings new life to the tale of Paris, Helen, King Priam, Cassandra, Odysseus, and the Greek gods, leading us toward the fated Battle of Troy.

Janell blends myth and history into one stunning chronological narrative. From the first sentence, her writing pulls you in, immersing you in a world where the gods’ whims shape human lives. It reads like an epic high fantasy novel alive with emotion, tension, and unforgettable characters.

What sets this apart is its fresh perspective. Janell focuses not on politics or battles but on the mythological roots an unwanted love story shaped by the gods. Paris’s destined love for Helen is portrayed with heart breaking inevitability.

The inclusion of female voices adds powerful emotional depth. Janell gives life to the often-overlooked figures of Troy, letting us see the war and its build up through their eyes. This perspective made the story feel fuller and more emotionally resonant. The gods are portrayed as truly fearsome, their presence looming large. You feel the dread of their games and the mortals caught in them.

A refreshingly adult, well-written take on the myth of Troy, Song of Sacrifice is more than a retelling it’s an immersive reimagining. I’m now halfway through book two, Rise of Princes, and can’t wait to continue this incredible journey.
