Not Quite by the Book by Julie Hatcher

Hello Readers,

A couple of months ago, while browsing Amazon First Reads, I came across Not Quite by the Book by Julie Hatcher and I’m so glad I did. What I thought would be a light, casual read quickly turned into a charming, feel-good escape that I didn’t know I needed. If you love books about books, slow-burn romance, and heartfelt stories of self-discovery, this one definitely deserves a spot on your reading list. I was drawn in by the literary premise and cosy vibe and ended up devouring every page.

At the heart of the story is Emma Rini, a devoted daughter who’s spent years running her family’s bookstore. She lives above the shop, works around the clock, and always puts everyone else’s needs before her own. So when her parents announce their retirement and simply assume she’ll take over the store without asking and Emma hits a breaking point.

Inspired by Emily Dickinson, Emma decides to take a spontaneous six-week getaway to a rundown old manor in Amherst, Massachusetts. Her goal? To live like Emily did quiet, creative, and completely off the grid. But life has other plans. From a rabbit-ravaged garden and some hilariously failed baking attempts to anonymous love notes and a grumpy (but very handsome) handyman named Davis Sommers, Emma’s peaceful retreat quickly turns into something much more unexpected and delightful.

This uplifting contemporary romance blends family drama, introspection, humour, and sweet romance in the most relatable way. I loved watching Emma slowly reconnect with herself, form new friendships, and reevaluate what she actually wants not just what’s expected of her. The romantic tension with Davis is subtle but satisfying, and Emma’s personal growth is what truly shines.

The letter-writing class, Davis’s adorable rescue dog, and the Emily Dickinson-inspired touches gave the story so much warmth and personality. Julie Hatcher’s writing is cosy and thoughtful, and many of the emotional beats especially around family and identity hit home.

Yes, the ending is a little predictable, but in the best way. Sometimes, you just want everything to come together in a way that makes you smile. If you enjoy Emily Dickinson-inspired fiction, bookstore settings, or just need a cosy story to get lost in, Not Quite by the Book is a delightful read.
