Hello Readers,
Based on the bestselling novel by E. Lockhart, We Were
Liars is a haunting, emotionally charged TV adaptation brought to life by Julie
Plec and Carina Adly McKenzie. Part teen romance, part psychological thriller,
and part family drama, the series immerses viewers in a world of privilege,
secrets, and emotional fallout. It’s available to stream now on Prime Video (Not sponsored).

The story focuses on Cadence, a teen from the
ultra-wealthy Sinclair family. A year after a mysterious brain injury wiped her
memory, she returns to her family’s private island for the summer. No one will
tell her what happened the year before during what the family ominously refers
to as Summer 16. So, Cadence sets out to trigger her own memories and uncover
the truth.
Told in emotionally rich flashbacks, the mystery unravels
slowly but deliberately. Cadence, acting as narrator, introduces us to her
cousins Johnny and Mirren, and her best friend—and love interest Gat. The four
teens, who call themselves “the Liars,” have spent every summer together on
Beechwood Island since they were kids.
The Sinclair’s appear to be the perfect American family but
beneath the surface lies dysfunction, tension, and deep emotional wounds. The
series explores themes of entitlement, generational trauma, and emotional
repression with nuance and care.
Emily Alyn Lind delivers a moving performance as Cadence,
balancing fragility, and grit. The chemistry between the Liars feels authentic,
and the setting stunning, sun-soaked Beechwood Island adds an eerie, dreamlike
quality that perfectly suits the story’s tone.
And then there’s the twist… a moment so unexpected that
it reframes everything that came before it. I managed to avoid spoilers before
watching, and when the truth was finally revealed, it hit me hard. It’s one of
those reveals that makes you want to immediately rewatch the series to catch
the clues you missed the first time around.
Watching We Were Liars made me want to dive into the book
it has such a surreal, poetic feel that now I’m really curious to see how the
original story compares. With strong performances and an atmospheric setting, it’s
a must-watch for fans of YA drama and psychological mystery. Let’s hope Family
of Liars is next.
