Hello Readers,
I listened to The Madness on Spotify at 11 hours 26 minutes it’s under the 15 free hours you get a month as a premium member. I know this a Mina Murray story, but it means Lucy will be appearing. If you’ve been here a while, you already know my complicated feelings about Lucy Westenra. If you’re new, let’s just say she’s never been my favourite BUT I always give every adaptation a chance to change my mind on her.
The Madness is a modern reimagining of Dracula, set against the haunting backdrops of London and Wales. Narrated brilliantly by Imogen Church, whose narration breathes life into every scene, this audiobook is as atmospheric and gripping as its cover suggests.
What makes The Madness stand out is its seamless blend of the modern world with the classic story. The vampires here feel unsettlingly real, a chilling reminder that Dawn has found a way to make them frightening again. You aren’t going to see any sparkling vampires here. At the same time, the story digs deep into psychological horror, exploring trauma, obsession, and the systemic mistreatment of women.
I’m going to try not to give away too much of Mina’s
story, as I loved going in practically blind only knowing that this was a
modern Dracula retelling. Dr. Mina Murray has spent the past twelve years in
London, working as a psychiatrist. When she becomes involved in a chilling
mystery, Mina is forced to confront not only her patient’s disturbing
afflictions but also the shadows of her own past.
The portrayal of Jonathan, Quincy, and even Dr. Seward feels authentic to Bram Stoker’s original characters and Dawn gives them refreshing depth. I am even unoffended by this Lucy Westenra, I’m not saying Lucy and I are besties, but I could be in the room with this version of her.
With beautiful writing, gothic atmosphere, and both beautiful and horrific imagery, I think The Madness is my new favourite Dawn Kurtagich book. It’s haunting, modern, and endlessly surprising a perfect listen for summerween, though I almost wish I had saved it for spooky season.
