House of Thorns by Lee Mountford Review

Hello Readers,
House of Thorns is 520 pages of pure, heart-pounding horror that completely consumed me. This was my first book by Lee Mountford and what an introduction. I read it in two parts, but honestly, if life had allowed, I’d have devoured it in one sitting. From the chilling prologue to the explosive finale, House of Thorns is utterly addictive, unputdownable, and packed with twists and turns I never saw coming.

The story begins with young Emily, a girl orphaned after a tragic accident, arriving at the imposing Erimus House with her social worker. The house, massive and unsettling with its locked cellar door and eerie atmosphere, becomes home to Emily and three other children Ollie, Daniel, and Lucy under the care of their guardian, Eleanor. But Eleanor is hiding something.

The first half of the novel is deliciously creepy and atmospheric, filled with slow-building dread that had my heart racing. Strange noises, shadows that move on their own, and that constant feeling of being watched. Lee crafts these moments with such skill that I could practically hear the creak of the floorboards.

Then comes the second half, and the story explodes into full-blown horror. When the children return to Erimus House as adults to confront their past, everything unravels in the most shocking, gory, and emotional way imaginable. Honestly, the only way I can describe it is like many others have and that is that it’s Final Destination meets The Shining. It’s pure chaos, terror, and heartbreak all rolled into one wild ride.

Lee’s writing is phenomenal vivid, emotional, and cinematic. He builds the world and his characters so beautifully that you can’t help but feel for them, even as you’re clutching the pages in fear. The nostalgia, the tension, the horror everything is perfectly balanced.

If you love haunted house horror, character-driven storytelling, and books that keep you up at night, you have to read House of Thorns. It’s creepy, shocking, and emotionally devastating in the best possible way. This book has made Lee Mountford an instant-read author for me.
