Scream Queens Season One Review

Hello Readers,

As spooky season rolls around, I’ve been diving back into some of my favourite horror TV shows, and few are as delightfully ridiculous as Scream Queens. Created by Ryan Murphy, this horror comedy series is one of those shows that sticks with you not because it’s terrifying, but because it perfectly captures the absurdity of the slasher genre. Watching it again, I was reminded how rare it is for a show to be both completely unhinged and utterly self-aware at the same time.

Rewatching Scream Queens reminded me just how clever and intentionally absurd it is. This isn’t just a parody of great horror movies= it’s a parody of bad horror movies. Set in the “Slasher Universe,” the show fully embraces one dimensional characters, ridiculous dialogue, and over the top decision making, turning every horror movie cliché into a joke. Its campy, self-aware tone is deliberate, and that’s exactly what makes it so great to watch.

The show’s humour shines through its exaggerated characters, especially Chanel (Emma Roberts), the hilariously vicious sorority queen, and Cathy Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis), the sharp-tongued dean. Even the most unbearable characters become stupidly fun to watch thanks to sharp writing and fantastic performances.

Yes, it’s dark, but the comedy-horror balance makes it irresistible. The mix of satire, slasher horror, and mystery works far better than it has any right to. From clever visual gags to homages to The Shining and The Exorcist III, the series feels like what anything set in the Slasher Universe wants to be self-aware, and wickedly fun. The first season remains a brilliantly chaotic love letter to horror fans and a must-watch for anyone craving campy Halloween entertainment.

Stay Spooky
