We Live Here Now by Sarah Pinborough Review

Hello Readers,

I picked up We Live Here Now for just 99p on Kindle, drawn in by a blurb that promised suspense, secrets, and a touch of the supernatural. This was the first book I’ve read by Sarah, and I’m thrilled to say it won’t be my last. As with any horror or psychological thriller, make sure to check trigger warnings before diving in.

We Live Here Now is everything I wanted in a psychological thriller, and then some. The story centres on Emily and Freddie, a married couple moving from London to the isolated Larkin Lodge in Devon. Emily is recovering from a near-fatal fall that left her in a coma, and the move is meant to help the couple rebuild their fractured relationship. But the house isn’t what it seems. Cold spots, mysterious noises, and an ominous main bedroom begin to unravel Emily’s sense of reality, while her marriage starts to crack under the pressure. Is the house haunted, or is Emily’s fragile health playing tricks on her?

Sarah masterfully balances three POVs between Emily, Freddie, and even a surprisingly poignant raven making the story immersive and multi-layered. The Gothic setting feels like a character in itself, and the eerie, claustrophobic atmosphere had me binge-reading in under 24 hours. The paranormal elements, paired with realistic marital tension, create a psychological horror that’s as original as it is gripping.

The twists are unpredictable, jaw-dropping, and utterly satisfying. I won’t spoil the final chapter, but the last twist left me laughing in disbelief at its brilliance. References to Edgar Allan Poe heighten the suspense, while the lyrical prose ensures every page is a pleasure to read.
