The First to Die at the End by Adam Silvera completely shattered me. I loved They Both Die at the End, but somehow this prequel hit even harder. Set on the eve of Death-Cast's initial launch, the story follows multiple perspectives, but Orion and Valentino are its heart and soul and they easily became two of my favourite characters in the whole series (till I read the next book).

I decided to listen to the audiobook version, and it was
such a great choice. The multiple narrators brought Orion and Valentino to life
so effortlessly, making the story easy to follow and incredibly engaging from
start to finish.
What makes this book work so well is that it isn't just a lazy rehash of the first novel. It dives into all the chaos and scepticism surrounding Death-Cast’s very first day: Is the system actually real? Can it be trusted? Getting to see things through the eyes of Joaquin, Death-Cast's creator, added such a fascinating, grounded layer to the whole concept.
The romance between Orion and Valentino is where the book truly shines. Because their connection starts early on, every single moment they spend together feels packed with emotional weight, making the ending hit like an absolute freight train. It’s tender, hopeful, and leaves you with one of those book hangovers that sticks around for days.
The little cameos from Rufus and Mateo were also such a nice touch they tied everything back to the original story without ever feeling forced or stealing the spotlight.
Honestly, this is one of those rare prequels that genuinely stands on its own. It’s heart-breaking, bittersweet, and a beautiful reminder to love as deeply as you can with the time you’re given. If you were on the fence about picking it up, don't hesitate just make sure you have a box of tissues nearby.
