Hello Readers,
On the 17th of January, this year I wrote a post about book to screen adaptions coming in 2022. I was looking forward to and now they have all been released but one in the UK. I have remembered to do a post of miniature reviews for each of the series. In June I followed up this post with a post questioning if 2022 the year of the book adaptions? And I think it might have been. I am writing this post on the 2nd of November and it would seem a lot of series are in limbo, I am waiting to see if Vampire Academy gets picked up for a second series and there has been a little controversy on social media around Interview with the Vampire.
I am using poster images I have found through google I do not own any rights and am using the image purely for review purposes (Fair use under the copyright act sections 29 and 30 under use for a review).
Rings of Power - The Lord of the Rings Prequel by J. R. R. Tolkien – Amazon Prime
I have a full review of this series here if you like a more in-depth review. Did I enjoy the series as a whole yes, but did I like the final episode no. If there is a second series, will I watch it despite my contradicting feelings yes probably. I wouldn’t go as far as saying it fails as an adaptation, but I think it just missed the mark and wasn’t quite what we expected. Overall, I think I just wanted more and that might mean I’m a greedy person, but this series was a dirty little tease.
Heartstopper by Alice Oseman – Netflix
I loved Heartstopper but my only tiny, microscopic gripe with this series is that I don’t think I fell into the target audience of this show as at the ripe old age of 29 I felt too old. It might possibly be very much a me problem. I loved Heartstopper not only for Charlie and Nick’s romance but also for the other impactful coming-of-age stories told throughout. I also appreciated how Heartstopper didn’t shy away from a heart-breaking analysis of queer identity
My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix – Amazon Prime
I loved the book of My Best Friend’s Exorcism, and I couldn’t wait to see the series on prime. I adored this horror comedy that pays tribute to the horror films I loved growing up the real classics from the 80s (Sorry 80s babies). You can jusge me dear Raeders but I love the trope where the adults won’t really listen or help. The demonic possession part of the story works well because it begins with small things and that intensifies quickly.
The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani – Netflix
How long did everyone last before they notice the Sophie is Lydia Deetzs from Beetlejuice on broadway. I will put my hands up and say the book is in my TBR pile but that being said I really enjoyed the film. It's clear that care has been taken in building the spectacular world, and with reverence to the books too. This movie had a its moments but there where bits where I wanted a little bit more and thought that it might jump down the well of deeper exploration of questions like, is there such a thing as fate? Are we all good or all bad? But we didn’t jump.
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice – AMC
Can I please just have a UK air date… despite my best
efforts I haven’t been able to avoid all spoilers for Interview with the Vampire,
but I am at the point that I WANT to see it and make up my own mind.
