Hello Readers,
I have loved every single Kalynn Bayron book I’ve ever
read, and Make Me a Monster is just another reminder of why she’s one of my
favourite auto buy authors. If you are a fan of classic horror, heavy gothic
vibes, you definitely need to add this to your spooky season TBR list.

The main character, Meka, is no stranger to death. She
grew up in her parents’ funeral home and just became a certified mortician’s
assistant, so her family business is definitely not your typical nine-to-five.
But when tragedy hits, strange things start happening. Ravens start circling
her house, weird visitors show up, and she gets this unsettling feeling that
the dead aren’t actually staying dead. Suddenly, Meka realizes her family
history is way darker than she ever thought.
As someone who loves classic horror, I thought this
Frankenstein retelling was amazing because it completely has its own identity.
It has this wonderfully eerie, gothic atmosphere with hints of old-school
monster movies, mixed with a bit of a weird, Tim Burton-esque energy. It feels
familiar enough to comfort you, but fresh enough to keep you guessing.
Meka is such a fantastic main character she’s smart,
fiercely loyal, and so easy to root for. Her relationship with Noah was another
highlight. Their romance is genuinely sweet, and I just wanted to keep them
wrapped up in a happy little bubble forever. Naturally, I got way too
emotionally invested, and let’s just say this book absolutely put me through
the wringer.
Piecing together the secrets alongside Meka was a lot of
fun. I had a few suspicions, but the twists still managed to catch me off
guard. Plus, I ended up learning a lot more about morticians and funeral homes
than I ever expected to, which was a cool bonus.
My only tiny critique is that I wanted a bit more time
with the characters and the central mystery before everything sped up so fast
at the very end. That said, the emotional punches, creepy atmosphere, and final
revelations made it a great read.
If you’re looking for a gripping gothic YA horror novel
with a dash of romance, heavy family secrets, and the perfect amount of
creepiness, Make Me a Monster deserves a spot on your reading list.
Stay Spooky
